The History of the Colessio Building in Stirling

Standing proudly in Stirling’s Old Town, the Colessio building has been a landmark of community life for more than two centuries. Its distinctive architecture and prominent position near Stirling Castle have made it a familiar presence through generations of change. Originally constructed in 1825, the building began its life not as a hotel, but as a Georgian bank, serving the needs of a growing and industrious city.

  • In the late 19th century, the building was transformed into the Stirling Infirmary, a role it fulfilled for the next 50 years. During this period, it became a centre of care and public service, deeply embedded in the daily lives of local residents. After serving as an infirmary, the building went on to support further civic functions, later becoming a library and administrative offices, continuing its legacy as an important community hub.

  • Archaeological work undertaken during the property’s conversion revealed even deeper historical layers beneath the site, uncovering evidence of medieval activity, including boundary ditches, a well, and large pits dating from the 12th to 16th centuries—a reminder that the land has been part of Stirling’s story long before the present structure was built

  • Today, although beautifully reimagined as a boutique B&B, the Colessio continues to honour its heritage. A Victorian pillared landmark, it remains a visible symbol of Stirling’s resilience and evolution, still contributing to the community in new ways. As Director Lee Norris has reflected, “This building has stood through generations… our job is to make sure it stands proud for the next one.”
