If you fancy your chances as a Nessie spotter then a day out driving up to Inverness and a visit to Loch Ness may be for you. It’s a bit of a drive, 155 miles which takes around 3 hours, but the scenery is spectacular. Urquhart Castle which overlooks the Loch is probably the place to head for as the prime monster spotting location, but I wouldn’t hold your breath if you are hoping for a sighting! You can make the day a circular route by heading to Fort William along the A82 which skirts the Lochs and then under the shadow of Ben Nevis take the road through Glencoe and Loch Lomond back to Stirling. It will be a long day driving, but don’t forget your camera for the absolutely stunning views.
Loch Lomond is Britain’s largest stretch of inland water and is a scenic 40 miles drive from Colessio. It forms part of the National Park that includes the trossachs and has some of the most stunning scenery in the world. You can stroll along the shoreline, hike up a Munro or cycle over the Duke’s Pass – there really is so much to do including fishing, horse riding, water sports, climbing or just a gentle walk or a cruise on the Loch.
If you are looking for some hiking routes and ideas for your break then 10adventures.com has created a well researched useful guide here:
Whilst staying at Colessio you can easily visit Edinburgh for the day and enjoy the sights of this world class city. By car it is just 42 miles and takes around an hour depending on traffic. Alternatively you could leave the car at the hotel and take the fast and frequent trains from Stirling to Edinburgh Waverley station, perfect for the shopping on Princes Street and views of Edinburgh Castle. Journey time is around 50 minutes and with the off peak Day Return ticket at £10.10 (2020) it may be cheaper than taking the car and parking!

Loch Katrine Cruise
With many charms and a rich heritage, Loch Katrine has won the heart of countless visitors. It is truly one of Scotland’s special places. Just as special as the magnificent scenery is the famous steamship, the “Sir Walter Scott”, which itself has been a landmark here in The Trossachs for over a hundred years. You can enjoy a cruise on this wonderful ship or on “Lady of the Lake” – the best way to experience the beauty of Loch Katrine.
David Marshall Lodge
The Lodge is an iconic building situated in the heart of The Trossachs just a few minutes from Aberfoyle village centre. From The Lodge you have stunning views towards the Loch Ard Forest, Ben Lomond and the Gargunnock and Campsie Hills. There is a children’s play area and an ingenious Lumber Jill, a maze that children can play on.
Heart 200 is a new suggested touring route of approximately 200 miles around Perth, Stirling, The Trossachs and Highland Perthshire – covering the Heart of Scotland. What’s more, this stunning journey links Scotland’s two national parks, Loch Lomond & The Trossachs and the Cairngorms.
