Stirling Castle

One of the largest and most important castles in Scotland. You can visit the Great Hall which was built for James IV around 1503, the richly decorated Royal Palace which recalls the years when it was the childhood home of Mary Queen of Scots and don’t miss the Great Kitchens showing what life was like for the men and women who served the Kings and Queens.

The Old Town Jail

Discover tales of the horrible history of crime and punishment in the Royal Burgh of Stirling. You’ll hear of infamous executioner Jock “The Happy Hangman” Rankin, along with murderers, martyrs and more. You will experience the popular and much praised Performance Tours that will make your time in jail even more vivid.

The Wallace Monument

This is one of Stirling’s most distinctive landmarks, overlooking the scene of Scotland’s victory at the Battle of Stirling Bridge. This is a place where history is in the air as you follow the story of Sir William Wallace, patriot, martyr, and Guardian of Scotland.

Holy Rude

The Church has been the historic Burgh Kirk, or Parish Church, of Stirling for 900 years and is the only church still in active use, apart from Westminster Abbey in London, to have hosted a coronation, when the infant King James VI of Scotland (later also James I of England) was crowned in the Holy Rude on the 29th July 1567.

Cambuskenneth Abbey

Cambuskenneth Abbey was founded in about 1140 by King David I to serve Stirling Castle, which stands a short distance to the west. It is the resting place of King James III and his wife Queen Margaret. The abbey’s chief delight is the bell tower, an excellent example of 1200s architecture.

The Beheading Stone

When it comes to horrible histories, you can’t get much more gruesome than the beheading stone, the clue is in the name! Reputed to be the location of the execution in 1425 of Murdoch, Duke of Albany together with his sons after being found guilty of treason.

Airthrey Castle

The Castle was built to a design by Robert Adam and the 363 acre grounds and man-made loch were designed by Thomas White for the Haldane family in the late 18th century. Now they all form part of the Stirling University campus and are open to the public. The campus also includes a Swimming Pool which is open for recreational swimming.
